In June, 1982, the Ontario Deputy Minister of Environment announced a sweeping reorganization of the Ministry. The former Pollution Control Branch would disappear and its constituent Sections would be re-assigned to other Branches in the Ministry while the Noise Section staff and resources were to be split between two separate Divisions. The future roles of the two Noise Control staffs have now been resolved and the following changes will occur on November 29, 1982. Further staffing and role adjustments may follow.

To observe the effect of different types of "coloured" noises, I examined four types of plants (peas, beans, radishes and shamrocks) exposed to three varieties of "coloured" noise (white noise, violet noise and Brownian noise). I discovered that most plants grew better when exposed to white noise, but that violet noise was more efficient at stimulating radish growth.

Canadian Acoustics developed from a news letter called “Acoustics and Noise Control in Canada” (ANCC). ANCC was started in 1973 with Tony Embleton as the first Editor. This was a simple production with photocopied pages hand stapled together, but it did include technical papers as well as news material. Tony Embleton was replaced by Gary Faulkner in 1975 and by Daryl May in 1977. During the years up to 1982, ANCC developed as a useful way for Canadian acousticians to communicate and keep in touch with acoustical activities in Canada. In 1981 Dee Benwell took over as Editor with plans for ANCC to become a real printed journal that was renamed Canadian Acoustics in 1982. Technical papers were encouraged and reviewed for acceptance for publication in Canadian Acoustics and the current schedule of 4 issues per year was set. Dee Benwell also initiated the format of the front page of Canadian Acoustics with the unique cover art by Simon Tuckett below the table of contents. After 3 years of being editor she was followed by John Bradley for another 3 years (Jan 1984 to Jan 1987). He built on Dee Benwell’s pioneering efforts and encouraged refereed technical publications, book reviews and news about international acoustical events. Being employed at NRC he was able to ‘encourage’ colleagues to contribute papers to Canadian Acoustics. He also carried out a survey of Canadian acoustical consultants and their areas of expertise which was published in the July 1986 issue. He was followed by Raymond Hétu who did much to continue efforts to strengthen the French content in Canadian Acoustics. He also introduced (1988) the blue title on white paper as the cover format that was used for many years. In 1990, Hétu was followed by Murray Hodgson, the second longest serving editor. He served for 9 years giving Canadian Acoustics a period of stable growth. He was followed by Ramani Ramakrishnan who has served as Editor for 15 years. During his long reign as editor, Canadian Acoustics has flourished, with improved printing quality, glossy covers, and coloured pictures. There have been special issues of conference papers, invited papers and many other new venturesCanadian acoustics is now in its 40th year and can look forward to continuing growth in its quality and the material that it publishes.

Special issues: Canadian Cities AcousticsAcoustics is a broad subject matter, as you know, that currently employs hundreds of us across the country in fields as different as teaching, research, consulting and others. To reflect such diversity and to -maybe- help each of us discover a new professional in your neighbourhood, the Canadian Acoustics journal is currently inviting submissions for a serie of special “regional” journal issues from individuals, groups and compagnies located within the greater-areas of major cities in Canada.Special issues of the Canadian Acoustics journal have been already programmed for June 2015 (Montreal), June 2016 (Toronto), and June 2017 (Halifax) while other dates are currently been secured for the other cities. How to be part of it?To contribute to these special “regional” journal issues, author are invited to submit their manuscript (2 pages minimum) under “Special Issue” section through the online system at http://jcaa.caa-aca.ca before February 15th of the publication year. Each manuscript will be reviewed Canadian Acoustics Editorial Board that will enforce the journal publication policies (original content, non-commercialism, etc., refer to Journal Policies section online for further details) while welcoming promotion of authors expertise, companies services, and consultants' success stories and the like. A true “regional” directory you want to appear in!Each of these regional local issues of the journal can be considered as a local directory book for acoustics. They will be published in hardcopies, sent to all CAA national and international members, while electronic copies will be made available in open-access on the journal website. The content of these issues will be entirely searchable and comprehensively indexed by scholar engines as well as by major internet seach engines (Google, Bing, etc.). Authors are invited to carefully select their keywords to maximize the visibility of their articles, while ad-hoc advertisement opportunities will be given to pair each article with a one-page full advertisement. For any question, please contact Prof. Josée Lagacée (deputy-editor@caa-aca.ca) or Jérémie Voix (editor@caa-aca.ca). To secure an advertisement for this special issue, please contact Clair Wakefield (adversisement@caa-aca.ca).Such an offer will only appear every 7-9 years, make sure to be in!

The Musician's Toolbox is an iOS app that presents an accessible and convenient interface to the user for performing actions such as tuning, transposing music, and creating modulations[1]. The ability to easily create modulations (musical transitions between two songs) is especially useful, as amateur musicians often lack the expertise to create acoustically pleasing transitions themselves. The app is a result of 3 years of development and collaboration with the creator of the invention that inspired the modulation section of the app.

Acoustics Week in Canada 2020 will be held on October 7-9, in Sherbrooke, Québec.
You are invited to be part of this three-day conference featuring the latest developments in Canadian acoustics and vibration. Sherbrooke is well known in acoustics for the Groupe d’Acoustique de l’Université de Sherbrooke (GAUS) founded in 1984.
The conference will be an excellent opportunity to visit or rediscover the GAUS during the International Year of Sound!
