But available evidence relating hearing damage risk to the various physical parameters of this kind of noise still form a fragmental body of knowledge. Because of this situation, occupational exposure limits are often proposed or set in terms of only one or two of the various relevant characteristics of impulse noises or in terms of arbitrary discontinuities in the physical parameters of noise. Also, procedure for the measurement of exposure to industrial impact noise are rather complex and unpractical. Scientific issues and practical problems raised by several empirical definitions of `impulsiveness’ are discussed.
