Safe-in-Sound Award™ Nominations Now Open (to Canadians as well!!!)

Since 2009, the Safe-in-Sound Excellence in Hearing Loss Prevention Award™ has recognized companies and individuals who have demonstrated excellence and innovation in their hearing loss prevention initiatives directed to the workplace. When created, only applicants who represented programs operating within the United States were eligible to the award. Starting this year Safe-in-Sound will also accept nominations for the 2025 awards from companies or individuals based in Canada.

Since the inaugural awards were presented in 2009, information on real-world success in noise control and other interventions for hearing loss prevention has been obtained and disseminated widely through the award website www.safeinsound.us and other media. Many of the interventions described online have led to elimination of the need for hearing conservation programs or to the reduction in the number of workers enrolled in these programs. In addition, the Safe-in-Sound Award™ has facilitated the extension of successful hearing loss prevention activities and strategies to workers not traditionally considered in typical workplace hearing loss prevention programs (e.g. musicians, military personnel, workers in services and construction).

The deadline for the submission of Letters of Recommendation from third parties is June 8, 2024 and for completing a self-nomination is August 19, 2024. Additional information is available at www.safeinsound.us

Exciting News: Transition to Online Access for Canadian Acoustics Journal

Dear Members of the CAA and Readers of Canadian Acoustics Journal,

As we continue to adapt to the ever-evolving landscape of scholarly publishing, I am pleased to share some important updates regarding the future of Canadian Acoustics, that you probably already read is the latest issue of Canadian Acoustics:

During our last October 2023 AGM, a pivotal decision was made regarding the distribution of our journal. Moving forward, Canadian Acoustics will predominantly be available online, marking a significant shift from our traditional hardcopy distribution method. Hardcopy subscriptions will remain available through a premium subscription option for those who prefer this format.

For those curious about the rationale behind this decision and the numerous benefits it offers, I encourage you to peruse the December 2023 editorial, where I delve deeper into this transition. And we are not the only ones in our academic community to undertake such a move: our colleagues from the venerable Acoustical Society of America have announced their plans to cease altogether printing issues of the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America (JASA) in January 2025, transitioning it to a fully-online publication.

All memberships in the Canadian Acoustical Association and subscriptions to Canadian Acoustics have been seamlessly transitioned to an "electronic only" format following the December 2023 issue. This means that each journal issue will be conveniently delivered directly to your e-mail inbox as a fully "web responsive" HTML document (next one shall be the March 2024 issue that is on hold to feature the proceedings of the joint ASA/AWC2024 conference). CAA members and subscribers will enjoy exclusive access to all published articles, with articles becoming open access to all readership 12 months after their initial publication.

Acknowledging that this transition represents a significant departure from our longstanding tradition of mailing hardcopies for over 51 years, we are eager to hear your feedback and accommodate any special requests you may have. In closing, I extend my gratitude for your unwavering support and enthusiasm as we embrace this exciting new chapter for Canadian Acoustics. JASA will be a fully-online journal

Here is an announcement received from our colleague (and former president of the CAA), Stan Dosso: JASA will be a fully-online journal by 2025!

I am writing to give you advance notice that the Acoustical Society of America (ASA) will cease publication of printed (paper) issues of the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America (JASA) in January 2025, after which JASA will be a fully-online journal.

There are several reasons for this:

The number of ASA members and institutions choosing JASA in-print has been steadily decreasing over many years and is now very small relative to the total number of subscriptions;
Discontinuing JASA in-print will provide a significant cost savings for the ASA in printing and postage charges;
Discontinuing JASA in-print will also eliminate the in-print color figure charges, making the journal more author-friendly and better configured for Read & Publish institutions;
Reducing paper printing is more environmentally friendly.

Please also note that the ASA will also no longer print paper issues of conference programs for similar reasons. PDF versions of the full programs will be available, and the ASA website and interactive apps will be available for improved meeting information.
