Abstract

A small arms fire detector, called Guardian, has been developed for Canadian peacemakers in hostile locations such as Bosnia. Guardian was developed at the MacDonald Dettwiler (MDD) Research Center and the Defense Research Establishment ValCartier (DREV) for the detection, localization, and classification of small arms fire. A description of small arms fire events and how these events are affected by the atmosphere are provided. The various detection techniques employed are described, along with conclusions on the most effective detection technique.
