Influence of Locomotive Speed and Throttle Profiles in Noise Modelling

Abstract

Locomotive speed and throttle settings are key parameters when modelling sound levels from diesel trains.  For a project contemplating changing from diesel to electric service, these parameters were found to be particularly influential when speeds are low near stations or destinations.  Sound level modelling using detailed speed and throttle data was conducted to more accurately assess mitigation needs.

Based on the revised modelling, larger effects from diesel trains pulling out of stations with high throttle settings were evident compared to lower effects for electric trains.  This detailed methodology allowed for a more accurate evaluation of the effects of changing from diesel to electric locomotives and the effects of constructing new train stations along the network.  Based on this modelling, recommendations for mitigation measures were provided with greater confidence, especially in around existing and future train stations.
