Abstract

A study was conducted to demonstrate an approach to generate and calibrate a sound contour map. A noise contour map of a 5 square km area was constructed as an undergraduate engineering project using Bruel & Kjaer's Lima software. The road volume data inputted into the model was taken from annual average daily road traffic (AADT) data provided by the City of Windsor. The major roads were assumed to have a heavy traffic concentration of 20% during day and 80% during the night, while the daytime and nighttime traffic split was even by overall volume. The synthesis of calibrated noise was possible after all the essential characteristics of the sound map were entered into LimA. The estimated propagation of noise using the British CRTN model produced optimum results for the investigated area, as it predicted the largest noise levels around the major roads in the city.
