Design of a 3D Acoustic Camera for Sound Source Localization in Workplace Environments

The increasing prevalence of noise-induced hearing loss among industrial workers highlights the need for advanced noise source localization in noisy, confined workplaces. In such settings, identifying noise sources remains a significant challenge. Acoustic cameras offer a promising solution, but their current limitations underscore the importance of innovating to develop more efficient and accessible tools for industrial applications. To address this, the project proposes the development of a portable 3D acoustic camera, combining an open spherical array of 64 MEMS microphones with an embedded platform for real-time signal processing. Innovations include time-division multiplexing (TDM) and a modified I2S protocol, enabling microphone spacing of up to 0.4 meters and simplifying the design of extended 3D arrays. Results are presented using a spherical array with a 0.31-meter radius and a 360° camera offering a refresh rate of 30 Hz on a 150,000-pixel grid. This system enables the 3D localization of multiple noise sources with centimeter-level precision and in real time, contributing to noise assessment and proactive measures for preventing hearing loss in industrial settings.
