Abstract

The impact of noise from rail operations and the effectiveness of abatement measures to evaluate the noise were assessed. It was found that the incompatibility of rail and residential land-uses pave ways for the noise complaints. Residential development close to rail yards and increase rail traffic near homes have resulted in increased complaints. Canadian rail guidelines assess these complaints by focusing on such problems as the construction of new homes near existing railways and the increase or relocation of rail traffic near existing homes.
