Résumé

Hypothetically, the presence of an upper denture may increase or decrease nasalance either by impeding the passive transmission of soundwaves through the palate and into the nasal cavities, or by decreasing the volume of the oral cavity and increase oral impedance thereby increasing nasalance. Thus, the presence of an upper denture appears to have a potential to alter resonance. The effects of upper dentures on nasalance values in normal elders was investigated. Twenty women aged 61 to 81 years who had worn upper or upper and lower dentures for at least one year prior to data collection were observed while reading the same passage aloud. Results are discussed.
