Mandarin speakers' production of english vowels in real and pseudo words

Résumé

A study was conducted to examine Mandarin speakers' production of three English vowels in real and presudo words. It was found that vowels in pseudo words differing only in the voicing of the initial consonant, will be assessed, to address the voicing status of the initial consonant in CVC(C) words influence the intelligibility of the following vowel. The potential effects of word frequency were eliminated, due to the use of pseudo words only. Eight native Mandarin speakers, ranging in age from 22 to 32 years participated in the study. The participants in the study started to learn English at the age of 7-14 years in school and had been in Canada for around 2.4 years. Effects of vowel and word frequency were measured for 'peseudo/low frequency' and 'low/high frequency' words.
