Les critères d'embauche et de maintien en emploi faisant référence à la fonction auditive sont presque tous inspirés des critères médico-légaux d'indemnisation de la surdité professionnelle. Ces derniers émergent d'une problématique très spécifique qui a conduit les administrations de la santé du travail à adopter des barèmes définis en termes de perte de sensibilité auditive. Il en résulte l'application d'un critère d'embauche faiblement ou nullement prédicteur des capacités exigées par les tâches assignées. Par ailleurs, le concept de réadaptation professionnelle est absent de la littérature audiologique; il n'existe donc pas de tradition concernant l'adaptation des postes de travail aux contraintes imposées par une déficience auditive. L'adoption d'un cadre conceptuel orienté vers la levée des différents obstacles à l'intégration des personnes présentant des déficiences auditives fait appel à une redéfinition complète des critères d'embauche en cette matière, soit: (1) la caractérisation des exigences de la tâche au plan auditif; (2) la caractérisation des capacités auditives requises au moyen d'épreuves valides; (3) l'adaptation du poste incluant, le cas échéant, le recours à des accommodements. Un bilan de notre programme de recherche concernant la détection des avertisseurs sonores en milieu de travail bruyant illustre une telle démarche.
