High-frequency bone conduction audiometry using a piezoelectric transducer

A piezoelectric transducer-based bone vibrator has been designed that can operate at high frequencies without the steep resonance peaks and voltage drops in the frequency response which limit the performance of the Radioear B-71. This device was evaluated along with the B-71 on eight subjects aged 18 to 30 years. Bone conduction threshold (BCT) was measured on occluded and unoccluded test ears using the Hughson-Westlake ascending/descending method. There was no significant difference in unoccluded BCTs between the vibrators at all frequencies, except at 4 kHz where the B-71 value was well above the ANSI S3.6-1996 reference equivalent threshold force level (RETFL), while that of the piezoelectric vibrator was only slightly lower.
