Abstract

Massive screening of auditory problems in the working population exposed to noise raises a crucial question concerning the relevance of periodically repeating hearingests. Quebec law with regard to occupational health and safety points out that medical surveillance should be established in order to prevent or to detect any health problem caused or aggravated by the workplace. In a context of monitoring audiometry, such a practice involves methodological and ethical problems. A review of the littérature on individual and group approaches has demonstrated an incompatibility between these approaches and the goals of awareness and prevention persued in occupational health. Instead of investing large amounts of money in monitoring audiometry, efforts should be concentrated on other solutions. For example, the promotion of noise reduction represents a logical extension to an audiometric survey as recommended by the CORACQ.
