Sound levels from headphone/portable compact disc player systems

To help examine options for managing risk of noise-induced hearing loss from the use of portable CD players, sound levels were measured on a variety of headphone/portable CD combinations. Two recorded sounds were measured: heavy metal CD music track and a filtered pink noise track conforming to the IEC requirements for a simulated programme signal. For heavy metal, all the combinations packaged together at purchase could give exposures exceeding Canadian Federal occupational limits. The effect was greater for combinations separately purchased. This suggests that the extent to which headphones are purchased separately may be an important consideration in evaluating options for reducing the risk of noise-induced hearing loss from use of these devices.
