Résumé

It is now well known that exposure to occupational and environmental noise is linked to negative health consequences. This exposure is particularly marked in urban centres. Sources of urban environmental noise are often associated with transport. The main ones being road, rail and air traffic. This study aims to give an overview of the current methods in application around the world for observing and managing urban environmental noise. This paper outlines indirect methods of managing urban noise - such as the introduction of noise policies, planning practices and the development of quiet areas. It then presents more details on existing noise observatories, as well as the various noise observation methods such as noise mapping and the Land use regression model. Finally, it is discussed how is it possible to observe the urban noise evolution in Quebec.

This Licensing Addendum ("Addendum") is entered into between the undersigned Author(s) and Canadian Acoustics journal published by the Canadian Acoustical Association (hereinafter referred to as the "Publisher"). The Author(s) and the Publisher agree as follows:
